Hate Crime Awareness Week 2013 – Activities in Wales

National Hate Crime Awareness Week is marked from 12th – 19th October in the UK.

For the first time this year, there will be a range of activities taking place across Wales.

Organisation: Welsh Government
Event/activity: Hate Crime Awareness Week Launch Cymru
Dates: Monday 13th September
Details: Official launch of Hate Crime Awareness Week in Wales hosted by Jeff Cuthbert, Communities Minister.  This will include the launch of the new Criminal Justice Board Cymru.  Follow @WG_LGCDept for updates on twitter.

Organisation: Race Equality First
Event/activity: Launch of ‘Wales: Standing Together Against Hate Crime’ film resource
Dates:  Tuesday 14th September
Details: The ‘Wales: Standing Together Against Hate Crime’ film resource will be made available to organisations in Wales. Organisations will be asked to register with Race Equality First to use the resource and receive a copy on DVD. Taster clips will be available on Vimeo and the Welsh Government website.

Organisation: Disability Hate Crime Action Group Cymru
Event/activity: Hate Crime Awareness Week DHC factsheet
Dates: Friday 11th October
Details: Disability hate crime factsheet produced by the Disability Hate Crime Action Group Cymru. 

Organisation: Dyfed Powys Police
Event/activity: Hate Crime Podcast by the Chief Constable and Chief Superintendent
Dates:  Monday 13th October (all week)
Details: Podcast will be available on twitter and the force website. It will be subtitled and available in Welsh. Follow @DyfedPowys for updates.  Press release here.

Event/activity: Multi-agency Hate Crime Conference
Dates: Thursday 17th October
Details: Force-wide conference for Hate Crime Officers and staff within Dyfed Powys Police

Organisation: South Wales Police
Event/Activity: Hate Crime Masterclass hosted by UPSI
Dates: 11th October
Details: Hate Crime ‘Masterclass’ for Inspector level Officers in South Wales Police force. The event included a range of presentation from Mencap Cymru, The All Wales Hate Crime Research Project and the Crown Prosecution Service. Organisation: South Wales Police, Bridgend Council, Bridgend Coalition of Disabled People
Event/activity: Hate Crime Awareness Event in Bridgend
Dates: 10.00am – 2.00pm, 16th October
Details: Officers from South Wales Police and various community groups will be on Brackla Shopping Centre in Bridgend town centre to speak to people about hate crime, raise awareness and encourage reporting

Organisation: North Wales Police
Event/Activity: North Wales Police Diversity Unit will be tweeting advice about hate crime throughout the week

Event/Activity: Video messages from Superintendent Mark Warrender on You Tube about why it’s so important to tackle hate crime, disability hate crime and a victim’s story.

Organisation: Caerphilly Council
Event/activity: New Hate Crime webpages, publication of a mapping report and a press release
Dates: Monday 13th October
Details: Activities being undertaken by Caerphilly Council to mark Hate Crime Awareness Week in line with their Strategic Equality Plan.

Organisation: Merthyr Tydfil Council
Event/Activity: Anti-bullying/hate crime awareness workshops at all schools in Merthyr Tydfil
Dates: All week/ongoing  
DetailsA series of workshops will be undertaken both with children and teachers of all schools in Merthyr Tydfil.  The Youth Team are delivering bespoke sessions designed to tackle bullying/ cyber – bullying/ hate crime and those designed for teachers are intended as a toolkit for them to use in future PSE lessons.  A recent project with LBG& T youth in Merthyr on cyber bullying and hate crime will showcase their work at schools during the week. The  schools will be provided with anti-bullying posters designed last year by the children and young people themselves as well as the pupil friendly anti-bullying policies to be reaffirmed with pupils in schools, along with links and resources for anti-bullying week.

Event/Activities: Hate Crime stands at Rhondda Cynon Taff Disability Conference
Dates: 31st October
Details: Stands with information about hate crime will be used to raise awareness at the conference

Organisation: Learning Disability Advisory Group, Mencap Cymru and Learning Disability Wales
Event/activity: 30 Years Since the All Wales Learning Disability Strategy
Dates: Monday 13th October
Details: Conference to mark the 30 year anniversary of the All Wales Learning Disability Strategy. Follow the hastag #30yearsAC
